Residence of Stefanos Rollis (1920)

The three-story cube-shaped building, erected after 1918, was used as a residence and a shop. It has a symmetrical organization of the facades, with a slight projection of the first and second floors, as in the attic configuration in the center of the roof. In particular, on the façade and on the first floor, there was a central projection of a “chachnisi”, while, at the same time, this projection created a balcony on the second floor. At a later stage, a ground floor shop was added to the frontage. The south-west corner of the building was destroyed in the war. Subsequent repair was limited to the part that survived, without restoring the original volume. The highly decorated frames of the openings can be seen on the Fouledaki Major Street, where part of the original building was preserved, testifying to the eclecticism of the building.
King Constantine was hosted in 1924. In 1932 it was sold to the Gogos family. Its current owner is Anastasios Gogos. During the inter-war period, the confectionery ‘OLYMPIA’ of Dimitris Giatas, called ‘Spoudaio(=Great)’, because he always served his sweets with the phrase ‘great sweets’, operated on the ground floor. The floor housed, at the time of their establishment, the three Post Office, Telegraph Office and Telephone Office. In recent years, the ground floor has been home to a carpenter’s workshop, an entertainment centre, the tavern ‘Varosi’ and today the café-café ‘Rivo’.
