St. Mark’s Holy Monastery.

The Holy Monastery of St. Mark the Evangelist in Proti of Florina was founded in 1864 by Metropolitan Meletios of Moglena. It is built in the mountain range of Varnounda, at an altitude of 959 meters and is 10 minutes away from Florina.
During the Macedonian Independence War, the monastery became the shelter of the Greek chieftains. Many times, the heroes Pavlos Melas, Lakis Pyrzas etc. were accommodated in its lodgings. With the liberation of the region from the Turkish yoke, the monastery experienced a residential boom, which, however, came to an abrupt halt with the beginning of the Second World War.
The Civil War battles were a blow to the operation of the monastery, as the buildings were completely destroyed by bombing.
The humble, now picturesque chapel of Agios Markos became a recreation area for Florentine nature lovers.
In mid-2000 the Holy Monastery of St. Mark the Evangelist was re-founded by His Eminence Metropolitan Theokletos. A new wing was built, the Katholikon was completely renovated and the surrounding area was wonderfully landscaped.
Today it functions as a commune with 6 nuns and gathers a large number of believers, who worship and venerate the relic of St. Mark and his mother Mary.
It is celebrated on 25 April.
