The Hamam

After the middle of the 17th century. Evliya Çelebi mentions the existence of two baths in the city of Florina. The oldest, which dates back to times before the conquest, was located on Palaiologou Street. The only surviving one is located in Justice Square, near the bed of the Sakouleva river, which defines the axis of development of the city. Its operation ceased in 1958. Chronologically, three phases can be identified. The construction of the basic core, consisting of the central warm space and the water tank, can be safely placed at the end of the 16th century. or early 17th. Its character as a private or public – common bath has not been clarified. The elaborate construction is detected in the harmonious design of the building, the stonework, the lighting holes, the dome and the presence of a marble floor, above the hypocausts. In the middle of the 18th century. The individual bath and the vestibule of lukewarm are added. The addition of changing rooms – residence of the owners was completed after the first quarter of the 20th century.
