Cross of Florina

At the top of the peripheral hill of Agios Panteleimon there is the Cross of Florina and the chapel of the Metamorphosis of the Saviour.
It is located south of the city, at an altitude of about 1020 m in the “koula” position, in a location of unique natural beauty with a panoramic view of the basin and the surrounding mountains. To the east is the plain of Florina with Mount Vorras. To the north is Peristeri and to the northwest is Mount Varnountas. To the south, Mount Vitsi rises imposingly.
The Cross and the chapel of the Transfiguration of the Savior was built in 1971 by the late Metropolitan of Prespes, Florina and Eordia, Augustinos Kantiotis. The chapel celebrates every 6th of August, 40 days before the 14th of September, the day of the Holy Cross, where an evening service is held on the eve and a solemn doxology on the day.
The choice of the church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, next to the 33-meter Cross of Florina, symbolizes the years of Christ’s presence on earth. The church of the Transfiguration of Soter a few metres behind the Cross is a stone-built church of Byzantine architectural style with a simple, clean interior decoration and iconostasis.
Pilgrims reach the cross by taking a hiking route through forest paths reminiscent of the martyr Gorgothas that the Lord passed through before his crucifixion.
