Sakulevas River (The river of Florina)

The river Sakulevas (or the river of Florina) is a river of Western Macedonia, which at its longest length flows in the prefecture of Florina.
It originates from Mount Varnountas and flows initially eastwards, passing through the city of Florina. It then flows through the lowland area east of Florina, turns northeast and enters the territory of North Macedonia where it joins the Erigonas, a tributary of the Axios river.
The river Sakulevas is an important part of the daily life of the inhabitants of the city of Florina. It has been and still is a meeting place, but it is also a place that provokes the passerby to reverie and contemplation. It gathers around it the intellectual world of the city, as it is surrounded by artists’ studios, as well as the Museum of Modern Art of Florina. It has been a source of inspiration, as well as a setting for several films by Th. Angelopoulos and continues to be a pole of attraction for local and foreign visitors, in combination with the neoclassical buildings of outstanding beauty that are located along it.
The river often freezes over in winter, offering images of outstanding beauty.
The previous municipal authorities, as well as the current one, invested a lot in its redevelopment and shaping, today it can be considered a trademark of the city.
