Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary – Kato Kleines

According to the fundamental inscription, the church was built in the time of Metropolitan Neophytos of Moglena from Vlastis (1824-1858), probably in 1835. According to local tradition, there was an earlier church on this site.
The church is a one-room rune with a semicircular arch, At the entrance, the following is written: “Let not the faint hearted and sacrilegious enter into this divine and holy dwelling, for the former guardian of paradise, now of this new Eden, I have become the guardian of the new Eden, and I will take away the souls of all men mercilessly”.
The temple was completed on September 24, 1838.
Later, in 1885, a 2.5 m wide external loggia was added on the south and west sides. At the same time, an octagonal false truss was added to enhance the lighting inside the church, which was inadequate due to the small and few openings.
The church is painted with frescoes of 1844, the work of a painter from Tirnavos Larisa, (according to an inscription on the south door of the entrance). Later, the representations of the prophets were painted on the octagonal pseudo-dome and the fresco of the Archangels on the south wall outside.
The church was declared a listed cultural monument in 1995.
A special feature is the church’s frescoes depicting the punishments of sinners in hell.
