Flampouro Primary School (1899)

Flampouro is one of the settlements where during the Ottoman period a school operated initially in a ground floor building, and later in the neoclassical building built in the second decade of the 20th century.
The foundation was laid in 1899 at the expense of the inhabitants of the community and building began up to the first floor.
The building was completed in 1923 -1924 at the expense of the “Omonia” association of the Flambourians of America.
In 1925 the school had an enrollment of 110 students (72 male and 38 female).
In 1930 the elementary school operated as a five-grade school.
Among the first teachers were Dimitrios Lambrakis, Apostolos Ziogas, teacher Aspasia Pavlou and kindergarten teacher Maria Nikolaou.
On 15 March 1990 the interior of the school was burnt to the ground by a fire that broke out in the roof from an unclear cause. It was restored in record time at the expense of the Greek State.
A special feature of the school is the exterior coatings (plasters), which are all “pulled” (made with molds) by flambourians masons and are preserved unchanged to this day.
It has been classified as a preserved monument (FEK 918/1993). It is currently in operation.
