Church of St. Charalambos(Agios Charalambos) – Achlada

On the northwestern slopes of Mount Vora (Kaimaktsalan) is the village of Achlada at an altitude of 730m. On the apennine hill, about 1 km SE of the village, on the other side of the river, there is the Holy Church of St. Charalambos, a monastery of the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary of Kladorachi.
The monastery of Agios Charalambos was built by a Hatzis, a resident of Meliti, in 1874. He, as they say, saw in his dream Saint Charalambos who showed him the place where the monastery would be built. It is also said that at the Saint’s suggestion he found money which he used for the construction of the monastery, and the Saint also showed him the Holy Cross, which was quite far from the monastery, and later it was moved to the monastery’s courtyard.
Next to the church, the cells and auxiliary rooms were built.
With the help of the Saint many miracles were performed, and His Holy Name is also miraculous.
The sick were put in separate cells, usually those suffering from incurable diseases (madmen, deaf and dumb, paralytic, blind). The handcuffs that bound the insane still exist today.
Usually the sick people recovered in six weeks.
In 1939, on the day of the feast, the monastery was burnt down due to the carelessness of the villagers.
Today a new church has been erected and is celebrated on 10 February.
