Church of St. George (Agios Georgios) – Melitis

East of Meliti, very close to the road to Achlada, one sees a new white and white church of undetermined temple type, dedicated to Agios Georgios.
In the basement of the elevated modern church, the ruins of an old temple have been encapsulated, which the villagers believe was discovered by the “inspiration” of their highly religious village woman, Mrs. Hatzi.
After persistent pleas from Mrs. Hatzi, the village priest George Papoulias rushed to dig with a mechanical excavator at the spot “indicated” by her. The narrative includes many details which we will not deal with here.
It is a temple belonging to the architectural type of the inscribed cruciform temples with constricted cross antennas with internal dimensions of the central square: 2.70 x 2.60. The depth of the cross antennas is uneven. The meridian one has a depth of 1.15, the northern one 0.90 – 1.05, the western one 0.80. The sanctuary arch is quite damaged.
