Old Academy (1931)

It was built in 1931 by the expert Dimitris Toussis to house the Teacher’s Training and Primary School of Florina. The building housed the newly founded (1941) Pedagogical Academy. It is a neoclassical eclectic building, the plans of which were drawn up in Athens with specific specifications. The six-room teaching building is freely structured on the site, with the usual S.E. orientation for educational institutions of this period, and includes 12 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, a computer laboratory and two offices.
It is a two-story building with a basement for educational use. The exterior is not particularly decorated. The only decorative element in the coatings is the relief outline around the windows, which form triads. The arched windows are of neo-Byzantine inspiration. The openings on the lower floor are rectangular, while those on the upper floor are arched. The outline of the main building is dominated by a turreted corner structure with a small balcony with a neoclassical balustrade, decorated with cast-iron rosettes. The eaves frame at the height of the roof is highly accentuated.
A total of 4 894 students attended the Florina Pedagogical Academy, of whom 1291 (26,4 %) came from the prefecture of Florina.
The Pedagogical Academy operated in the building together with the 4th Primary School until 1983-1984, when it was moved to new premises.
