Primary School of Vevi (Banitsa) (1919)

The construction of the building lasted five years (1919-1924) at the expense of the Greek state and the community. It was built to function as a 6th grade primary school, in the centre of the community of Banitsa – Vevi. The school building is one of the typical education buildings of the interwar period, with neoclassical elements. It is characterized by strict symmetry, proportions in the openings of its facades and rhythmic repetition of these…The main entrance is emphasized by the staircase leading to the front door of the building, which is distinguished externally for its simplicity. The same symmetry appears in the interior, which consists of three classrooms on each floor…The primary school of Vevi operated in the pre-war period (1935-1939) as a six-grade school with a large number of pupils. The building continued to operate as a primary school until 1970, while for the period 1970-1978 it operated as the Vevi High School. After many years of abandonment, the Ministry of Education decided to open an Environmental Education Centre (EEC) in the building.
