The Folklore Dances of Florina

Local music accompanies the dances of the region, which are of great variety. The ‘Lytos’ or ‘Pustseno’, the most widespread dance, has a variety of melodies and its name identifies the way it is danced (with the hands down). The ‘Sirtos’ or ‘Zaraka’ is the dance that opens every wedding feast. The ‘Hashapiko’ or ‘Zaramo’ is a dance widespread throughout the Balkans. The ‘Gerontiko’ or ‘Starchko’ is danced by the elderly and is slow in character.
Dances such as the ‘Kori Eleni’ or ‘Leno Mome’, ‘Tsourapia’, ‘Paitouska’ and ‘Raikos’ are also very popular in the prefecture of Florina.
The ‘Tik’, ‘Kochar’, ‘Seranitsa’, ‘Letchina’, ‘Dipat’, ‘Trygona’, ‘Sarigood’ and ‘Omal’ are the most widespread dances of the refugee communities of the prefecture who come from regions of Asia Minor and Pontus.
Many dances are identified by the region where they are danced, such as the “Aloniotikos” from the village of Alona. In this village we find other dances such as “Omorfoula” or “Licheno” and “Simpethera”.
In the lowlands, the ‘Arvanitiko tsamiko’ was a particularly popular dance, while in Flamburo and Drosopigi the ‘Berace’ was danced. The dance ‘Macedonia’ is danced in a similar kinetic form throughout the prefecture of Florina.
Almost all the cultural clubs of the Municipality of Florina give lessons in traditional dances.
