Church of St. George (Agios Georgios) – Alona

The church of Agios Georgios is located 500m outside the village. On the day of its celebration, a three-day festival begins with all-night processions and dances. A legend of the village says that the church was built after a prayer of Neven, who entrusted it to the elder Nikolaos Kamperis.
Agios Georgios is a typical three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica with a spacious porch, which is supported on sturdy pillars. It has a unique apse with the well-known relieving blind arches and a unique narrow slit as a lighting opening in the sanctuary. The gable roof shows the typical sectioning on the gables and a square opening on the axis.
In the centre, the wooden light structure of the central lantern protrudes from the gable roof. The west side of the church is simple. Only the three arches of the ground floor pronaos (exonarthex) dominate. On the lintel of the central meridian window there is an engraved date 18+73, which reminded us of the other, correspondingly engraved one of the churches of Agios Nikolaos in Akritas (Boufi). I believe that the builders of the two churches were the same, because both churches show common morphological features.
Besides, the church of Agios Nikolaos in Akritas is dated “18+72”, which is one year away from Agios Georgios.
