Polypotamos (Nereti, Neret)

Polypotamos is a village of the Municipality of Florina, just 15 km from the centre of Florina, built at an altitude of 960 m. and includes the settlements “Chorioudaki” and “Laseitsa”. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture, animal breeding, lumbering and construction.
The name was given to the village because five small rivers flow into the river that runs through the village.
Its original name is Neret (or Nereti in Greek), which means “without order”. Pavlos Melas had passed through here with his group. In an engagement in 1904, his close associate, Philip Kapetanopoulos, died in the village
The inhabitants of the village have preserved the village’s unique traditional architecture, as well as their cultural and heritage traditions.
The strawberries of Polypotamos are very well known, as strawberry cultivation was the main production of the village.
The village is known for its beautiful central square with the waterfall, the amphitheatre and the church (I.N. of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary), while there is also a Folklore Museum open to visitors with a collection of local exhibits offered by the villagers and housed on the second floor of the Primary School.
The preserved Primary School of the village is said to have been built by the inhabitants from the stones that were brought down by the river after a very heavy rain.
As the village is built amphitheatrically, it is surrounded by many dense forests of beech, oak and alder trees.
The church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, built in 1913, is celebrated on August 15, while other churches in the village are Agios Athanasios, Agios Nikolaos and the Monastery of Agios Loukas (1912 – 1913).
