The Courthouse

It was built in 1906 by the Ottoman Kaymakam Tahsin Uzer, in order to house administrative services, on the main street of the city. The two storey building of the current Courthouse, (113 Megalou Alexandrou Street), imposes with its complex volume on the “wide” street of the city, despite the small setback in relation to the street line, while its parallel rear side delimits the area of the Justice Square, with the prison building at a short distance.
The building has many openings, while cornerstones on the ground floor and false pilasters on the first floor emphasize the edges of the building’s four corner projections. Horizontal decorative frames separate the floors. On the central façade, the gable end and its framing with false pilasters form the axis of symmetry of the building’s openings. The typology of the megaron is characterised by the peripheral arrangement of the halls, while the corridor for the communication of the rooms runs parallel to the interior. As part of the ‘radical renovation’ of the building in 1990-1991, only the original shell was preserved, with a complete reconstruction and redesign of the interior, which is a reminder of the original typology.
