The beans of Florina

Elephant and giant beans from Florina are the main ingredient of the well-known traditional Greek recipe, the infamous fasolada. You certainly know that they are also baked in the oven (pan or plate) or made into a salad. They are undoubtedly particularly healthy and nutritious foods and easily find their place in the Mediterranean diet. Elephant and giant beans belong to the same Greek variety of excellent quality beans. The differentiation of the two categories is based on their size and their amazing quality is due to the combination of the microclimate and the soil composition of the area.
Beans are grown throughout the prefecture of Florina. Viable crops exist in the area of Prespa. Smaller amounts are cultivated in all the mountainous villages of the Municipality of Florina (Triantafyllia – Polypotamos – Akritas etc.). In 1994, Greece recognized Florin’s elephant and giant beans as a Protected Designation of Origin. The competent committee of the European Union recognized them as a Protected Geographical Indication.
